What you need to know about disposable coffee pods

Throughout history, coffee enthusiasts and innovators have strived to perfect two important qualities in our favourite morning beverage: convenience and taste.

Perhaps one of the most revolutionary coffee inventions has been the espresso - meaning ‘fast’ in Italian - machine in the early 1900s by Luigi Bezzerra. This could arguably be the first form of ‘instant’ coffee, and the predecessor to today’s most significant coffee invention: the coffee pods. These small and convenient coffee containers have become increasingly popular over the past few decades.

What exactly is a coffee pod?

onecoffee podOtherwise known as a single serve coffee container, coffee pods are pre-packaged ground coffee beans in their own filter. They come in plastic, aluminum and most recently in biodegradable containers, usually designed for use with a specific brand or system.

Although pods seem to tick all of our coffee boxes (consistently great tasting coffee in an instant), in recent years, consumers have grown concerned over the impact disposable pods have on the environment. The good news is manufacturers have picked up on this wariness and have since come up with different solutions to minimize the carbon footprint of your morning cup of instant joe.

One of the largest players in the industry, Keurig’s pods offer a wide variety of flavours and blends, all with the convenient packaging of a single use container. Although currently not fully recyclable yet, Keurig has made public its commitment to develop more sustainable packaging, making all their pods 100% recyclable by 2020.

The pod that started it all, Nespresso was the first company to market the ‘coffee in a capsule idea’ dating back to 1976. Although only some of their pods are made with 100% recyclable aluminum, there are programs such as Terra Cycle that have partnered with Nespresso to recycle pods in over 4,256 locations across Canada.

Music to coffee lovers’ ears is great tasting coffee with minimal carbon footprint. OneCoffee is a Canadian company that has ‘set out to create the most sustainable single-serve coffee available,’ all without compromising taste or quality. These pods are compatible with KEURIG® coffee makers and available in a variety of flavours at WA-2!.

Mimicking the packaging of a tea bag, these pods take ‘planet friendly’ to the next level: they’re 100% compostable. Compatible with most single cup pod brewers, Java One combines quality taste with the convenience of a single cup brew.

While there isn’t yet a universal eco-friendly pod solution, it isn’t all doom and gloom when it comes to single serve coffee. We expect the industry will continue to move towards making all pods 100% recyclable and biodegradable. Until then, whether you’re a pod veteran or new to the party, we hope you’ll select the products that will provide you with the best coffee experience, with the least negative impact on the planet. And we will as well!
